Enrolment Information
Waikino School has always had an excellent reputation for delivering quality learning programmes in a rich contextualised environment.
Over the past three years, Waikino School has made significant progress in academic achievement and has been recognised for it's quality learning environment, strong community engaged and child centred curriculum which is rich in context, experience and inquiry. In short our children are thriving and love coming to school each day to learn.
Our Edible community gardens, fruit tree highway, bee keeping and chicken raising focus to date has kept us in the local paper and shown us to provide a contextualised, experience based, dynamic programme. Our 2014 "Last Song of the Kokako" album success has seen us become downloadable on iTunes and Amplifier. In 2015 we achieved a GreenGold Enviro Schools award, and we have continued to achieve excellent National Standard results across the school.
Our Vision is simple and clear: helping support children learn to become leaders in their own life while fostering a lifelong love for learning. Our Values aim at helping children feel empowered to become resilient members of our community as they approach an ever changing, unpredictable and uncertain future.
We are proud of the opportunities we provide for our children which we believe sets us apart from other schools and which sets children up for success in their future.
Our recent upgrade of our I.C.T infrastructure and technologies, along with the development of a modern 'Learning Hub' and the upgrade of our junior classroom block in 2017, creating a highly effective and useable learning environment, reflects our commitment to empowering our students to experience the best, and be prepared to keep up with the latest changes in global technologies and approaches to learning.
We welcome your enrolment inquiries for children Years 1-6 and encourage you to call into our school and take a tour of our grounds and facilities. Our Principal would love to meet you, answer any questions you may have, and show you around. Please do not hesitate to contact us to arrange an appointment. Our commitment to providing an after school care programme available to both Waikino School children and Non-Waikino school families-a programme which can start as soon as our numbers interested in weekly care reach 8 children- and our commitment to providing a school van are just some of the future developments unfolding for the vision of making our school more accessible to Waikino, and the wider Waihi district. Their is no enrolment zone or restrictions imposed on our school and a bus service currently brings existing children to our school from outside of Waikino.
Our new entrant teacher is regularly in contact with early childhood centres in Waihi, strengthening our relationships, making our posters and enrolment information available, and aiding in a smooth transition process to our school. Our children have hosted these centres here at school and have also visited centres with their teachers, showcasing workshops and other learning experiences which enabled families to see first-hand the kind of learning opportunities available in our school-this is also part of our desire to extend our own students leadership skills and confidence in sharing what they learn with others. Early childhood centres will continue to be invited to participate in Waikino school discovery days-where we explore the key competencies of the New Zealand Curriculum through a range of dynamic, challenging and empowering learning experiences. For more information about this ask your early childhood centre if they are involved in these upcoming planned visits, and if not make a request for them to contact us and arrange a visit either to our school or for our children to come and visit them!
For a 5 year old starting school, pre-school visits are very important in ensuring the smooth transition from pre-school to school.
We encourage 3 or 4 visits, for a morning, with a parent staying with their child. Some children may benefit from more visits and this can be discussed with our experienced new entrant teachers. We do not have a set day or time for pre-school visits and will do our best to fit in with you. Please ring to talk about arranging a convenient time to visit.
Another way for pre-school children to transition to our school, is by attending our fantastic playgroup, which meets on Friday mornings in Te Kauri Hall. This can be a good way to meet with other parents and families in our school, and provides opportunity for the children to interact with our junior class, before they start school.
Finally, please take the time to throughly check out our website. I'm sure you will be impressed by what we offer and the opportunities that we are able to provide your children. We'd love to hear from you soon!
