Over the past two years, the Waihi Netball Association has been rolling out the ANZ Future Ferns program. This year saw Waikino have a Year 1-2 team for the second year running. It is an ideal starting point for our young players. The emphasis is on gaining skills such as passing, catching, landing with a stable base position, pivoting and shooting goals with the hands above their head. There is an element of fun running through the program with the aim of students gaining skills and knowledge while building a love of the sport. The games are 4 a side, with less rules. This allows the star helpers to support and guide the players thoughout the game.
As I flittered between teams on a Saturday morning, Julia, Ms P and Grace were all a fantastic support to our new players. Encouraging them to participate, move around the court and teach them new skills. The confidence of our youngest players increased and they are now more familiar with the sport of netball. The majority of the team were Year 1 (or younger) so next year will be a time for them to master the 4 a side game before taking the next step the following year. It will be great to see Byron, Nicolas, Narissa and Lexie leading our team next year with April hopefully joining our Year 3-4 team.
Thank you Casey, Julia, Ms P and Grace for all your time and effort and for the passion with which you were involved!
