After enjoying our whole school Bike wise program with Sharlene Kelly, Room 2 decided we could plan and make our own bike obstacle course and use it for our fun TRYathalon. We spelt it deliberately like this, because we wanted our TRYathalon to be about getting together, giving things a go and having fun.
In order to do this while the Year 5 and 6’s were out at a leadership workshop in Te Kauri, Mr. B and his Year 3 & 4’s set to work designing and making our obstacles for the course. Mr. B had lots of technological problems that he needed the students to help him solve; they rose to the challenge brilliantly! We built four obstacles for our course, which included a balancing track, bridge, seesaw and massive ramp for a big jump. It was awesome! Once we set the course out we had to walk Room 1 through it as well.
On the night we modified how we use the pool for each age group, some zig zaged the pool while others swam full lengths. We went out in waves, moving from the pool into our bike course. The parents helped us in transition and made sure we didn’t crash too badly on the obstacle course-but we didn’t crash at all! Then we jumped off our bikes and headed to the run and to the final part of our event. Since it was meant to be maximum fun we also added a giant water slide down hill for good measure. It was brilliant.
At the end of the night the children versed the parents. Mr. B and 9 other parents took on 10 other children, the result was hilarious. We even modified the swim part of the race to included riding 2 green foam dragons. You can imagine all the laughter that filled the school grounds.
We decided, not surprisingly that we really must do this again next year!
