TRANSPORT OPTIONS

Go Bus provides transport for rural students in the local region.   Waikino School also offers a private van shuttle service for those that require more personalised transportation assistance.  There is a carpark at the front of the school for parents transporting their children to school by private vehicle.   If you are travelling from outside of Waikino Village, there may be the possibility of establishing a carpool arrangement, with other families that live near your home.

School Bus Service

A Ministry of Education funded bus service is provided for rural students (within the eligible Waikino School Zone).  This service is operated by Murphy Buses. The bus departs from Waihi at 7.30am, and collects students living in the Waitawheta area, dropping them at Waikino School just after 8.00am.   In the afternoon the bus leaves Waikino School at 3.30pm, proceeding to drop off students who live in Waitawheta.  For further details of the route,  please visit the Waikino School office.

Waikino School Van Service

Waikino School offers a van service, for transporting children to and from school. This service is a user-pays service, and is subsidised by sponsorship from local businesses.  If you would like to utilise the Waikino school van service for your children, or are interested in sponsoring the school van, please contact the school office to discuss details.  Alternatively, you can secure a seat for your child by completing the online booking form below.

The Waikino School van currently offers transfers to and from Waikino School in the morning and the afternoon, with collection points in Waihi, Karangahake and Paeroa.  However, we are happy to discuss your personal requirements, and will do our best to accommodate your needs.

The Waikino School van is also used to benefit our students and their learning - enabling us to take part in education opportunities outside of the school premises, such as school excursions and attending sporting events.

UNIFORM

Our students learn in a variety of outdoor settings and often get wet and muddy, therefore, for the convenience of our families, students have the option of wearing mufti OR  uniform when they attend  Waikino School.   However, for school excursions and formal events, school uniform may be required, so it is recommended that students have at least one uniform top.  These are available for purchase from the school office.

School shirt (quick dry fabric) with school emblem $37 each

Polar Fleece with school emblem                                        $43 each

Older style polo shirts  with school emblem     (while stocks last)         $26 each

When formal uniform is required, student can wear any black pants, shorts, skorts, skirts or leggings of their choice, to accompany their uniform tops.

Hats are compulsory during Term 1 and Term 4 each year.  Please ensure your child brings their hat with them each day, or has a designated named hat that can remain at school.

SWIMMING POOL

Waikino School has its own swimming pool, which is used on a daily basis during the swimming season.  Learning to swim is an important part of the school programme and formal lessons are given every day during the swimming season.

ABSENTEES

If your child is going to be away from school, we ask that you contact the school by Text message on the absentee phone (021) 0869 3371.  Please advise your child's name, and the reason they are absent from school.  Alternatively,  you can call the school office on (07) 863 7733, and speak to Jenni.

COMMUNICATION AND SCHOOL ASSEMBLY

We use a variety of methods to keep our school families 'in the loop'.    Most day-to-day communications from the classroom teachers, and whole school notices, are sent out digitally via Class Dojo.  This is an easy way to keep you informed about what your child is doing.   Our school facebook page is also a great place for keeping up-to-date with news, and photos from school events.

We also have regular assemblies, at school.  This is where we provide notices relevant for the students, introduce new students, and celebrate achievements that have occurred.  At intervals throughout the year, we hold special assemblies.  Special assemblies are an opportunity for our students to sing, and to showcase some of their work. Keep an eye out for updates with dates of these special assemblies, as we love to have our school community attend.

SPORTS AND CULTURE

Kapahaka

Waikino School has a strong Kapahaka roopu.  All children are welcome to be a part of this.   Our kapahaka roopu often represents our school at community events, powhiri, and sometimes performs at our school assembly.

Sports

We encourage our students to participate in a wide variety of sports.  Some of the sports our students have the opportunity to take part in include: Swimming, Athletics, Cricket, Softball, Mini-ball, Netball, Basketball, Football, Gymnastics, Tapuwae, BMX, Hockey, Adventure Racing and Touch Rugby.

Music

If your child is interested in music tuition, Aliza is offering private lessons, at Waikino School.  These will be held on Thursdays, during the school day.  Please contact her directly to book your child in on 021 040 5379 or email on alizaduley@gmail.com

LEARNING ASSISTANCE

Learning assistance programmes operate in our school, with students having access to Quick 60 Reading, Spring Maths and other interventions to support learners.  We also look at ways we can extend our students within our Gifted and Talented programmes.

ENROLMENTS  AND PRE-SCHOOL TRANSITION VISITS

If you are considering Waikino School as an option for your child, we encourage you to come along and meet with our Principal, have a tour of the school facilities, see our classes in action, and have a chat about how we can best meet the needs of your child.  To arrange a suitable time for a visit, please call the office on (07) 8637733, or send an email to: office@waikino.school.nz

For a 5 year old starting school, visits are very important in ensuring the smooth transition from pre-school to school.  We recommend having three or four school visits, in the weeks before the child starts in our new entrant class.  We do not have a set day or time for pre-school visits and will do our best to fit in with you, however,  ideally, the transition visits will take place during the morning, and a parent/caregiver should remain with the child during this time.

For future enrolments, please complete the Enrolment Expression of Interest form below.  This helps us plan for the future, so we can better manage staffing to keep class sizes at appropriate numbers.

An enrolment form can be picked up from the school office, or downloaded via the link below.
